8 Winter Tips for Your Home

8 Winter Tips for Your Home

Winter can be a tough time for homeowners. Dealing with the harsh temperatures and higher energy bills can be an extra strain on your family and your budget. But there are some things you can do to reduce energy costs and keep your home warm and safe throughout the winter. Below are 8 tips for homeowners during the winter:

  1. Switch your fan to run clockwise on a lower speed. This will help circulate warm air through your home, since heat rises.
  2. Consider replacing older windows. Uninsulated windows can allow a lot of heat to escape your home. Replacing older windows with newer, more highly insulated windows will help you retain heat and save on your energy bill.
  3. Insulate your attic. You could be losing heat through your attic if it hasn’t been properly insulated. Insulating your attic can keep that vital heat inside your home.
  4. Turn off water flow to your outdoor spigots. Water spigots outside your home should be turned off to prevent busted pipes.
  5. Clear out your gutters. Debris in your gutters can lead to ice buildup and leaks. Clearing out your gutters before your first snow will help you manage those risks.
  6. Turn down your water heater. If you turn your water heater down to 120o, you can save money on your energy bill without even thinking about it.
  7. Regular chimney maintenance. If you have a chimney in your home, keeping it clean and properly maintained will not only save you money but will help keep your home and family safe.
  8. Regulating your thermostat. Lowering the temperature on your thermostat while you’re not home will help you keep your energy bill low.
