When snow falls it often means playtime is just around the corner. Whether it's building snowmen, sledding or throwing snowballs, kids love to play in the snow. While your children are enjoying the snow, it's still important to keep safety a priority.
Make sure they are dressed for the weather. Layers are more effective than a single thick coat. Start with a t-shirt or pajamas, then add a heavier t-shirt and sweats. Top it off with a winter coat, hat, mittens/thick gloves, a scarf, and some comfortable winter boots. Use clothes that are slightly too big so that they have room to move with all of those layers on.
Playing in the snow is a lot of work. Especially when you pile all of those layers on. Make sure your children stay hydrated. Before they go out to play and when they come back inside, have them drink water. Stay away from sugary drinks like soda, since these actually dehydrate the body.
As fun as it is to stay out in the snow all day, it's important to break it up into intervals. Have the kids come inside regularly so that they can warm up and rest. A snack or some a warm treat can help lure them inside.
If anyone complains about being so cold they can't feel their fingers, toes, ears or nose, go inside right away. If those parts of their body feel hard or look shiny, call your doctor. Those are signs of frostbite and if treated right away, the damage is minimal.
Lastly, use your health insurance and schedule a check-up for your children. Most health insurance plans provide for annual check-ups and your doctor can ensure all shots are up to date, and can talk with your children about being safe during playtime.
