Safety Tips for 4th of July Weekend | Sidle Insurance

With the Fourth of July just around the corner, there will be plenty of festivities to take part in the next week. You might even have some exciting holiday plans in store yourself. We too are excited about the holiday fun, but as experts in risk management, we also have a few things to say about safety.

Here are some Fourth of July safety tips.

1. Keep fireworks and grills away from dry grass and overhanging foliage. Make sure to have a fire extinguisher (don’t dump water on a grease fire) and a bucket of water or hose nearby.

A bucket of sand or dirt can also be used to smother a fire, but if a fire gets to large to put out, evacuate immediately and call the authorities. (You can check out our 7 Grilling Safety Tips For The Summer for more grill-related tips.)

2. Alcohol and fireworks do not mix well. Do not drink and attempt to launch fireworks. You or someone else could be seriously injured. Always read directions and never try to re-light or fix duds.

3. If you plan to go out boating, bring life jackets for everyone aboard. You can read more boating tips here. On a similar note…whether in a lake, a pond or even a swimming pool, children should always be supervised by a sober adult who can swim and provide first aid and CPR if necessary.

4. If you plan to have a bonfire, keep the fire at a safe distance from trees, shrubs, tents, branches, and other flammable objects. After you’re done with the fire, put it out entirely. Douse the embers with water and use a shovel to separate and smother the ashes.

5. Review your insurance coverage before having guests over to your home. Make sure that you have the proper amount of liability coverage included in your homeowners insurance policy just in case someone gets injured on your property. If you have questions about your coverage, we encourage you to reach out to us. You can give us a call at (607) 535-6501 and we can discuss how to find the best insurance options to fit your needs.
