Winter Weather Tips for Your Pets

Winter Weather Tips for Your Pets

In the wintertime, we all want to spend more time in the comfort of our well-heated homes. This is also true for our pets. Just like us, they need to avoid exposure to harsh weather and cold temperatures, not to mention winter storms and snow. But trying to stay warm is the not the only issue our pets face in the wintertime. Take a look at the tips below for keeping your pets safe during the winter.

  • Keep Your Pets Warm and Dry. If you think it’s too cold and nasty for you to stay outside, it’s too cold for your pets to be outside as well. Just like people, pets can suffer hypothermia and pneumonia from exposure to harsh winter weather.
  • Keep Water Available. If your pet is outside, they will need more water to generate heat and stay warm in colder weather.
  • Clean Off Paws After Being Outside. After your pets have been outside, wipe down their legs and paws. The chemicals we use to clear ice and snow can cause health issues for your pets, and you definitely don’t want them to swallow those chemicals when they’re cleaning themselves.
  • Check for Cats. In the colder months, cats and other small animals tend to hide around vehicles to stay warm and seek shelter. Search under your car and around your tires, as well as under the hood before turning on your car.
  • Don’t Leave Them in Your Car. Cars can hold in cold air and just as they can get dangerously hot in the summer, they can become incredibly cold in the winter months.
  • Keep Up to Date Information. If your pet disappears, having them microchipped and wearing tags with your information will have them get home to you safe. This tip is a good practice year round.

Keep these tips in mind and keep your pets safe. We wish you a happy and safe winter season.
